A solicitor who previously worked at law firm Devonshires has returned to the firm as a partner to strengthen its growing construction and engineering practice.
Michael Wharfe, who is originally from New Zealand and is dual qualified, worked for the firm for three years 12 years ago and said returning was like coming home.
Michael joins from US law firm Steptoe & Johnson where he was a senior associate.
A specialist in commercial disputes and arbitrations, often with an international element, Michael bolsters a team of 14 fee earners in Devonshires Construction and Engineering team.
He will bring his extensive experience of high-value contentious litigation cases to the firm.
Michael said: “I spent three years at Devonshires as my first job in the UK so when I had the opportunity to re-join the firm it felt like I was returning home. I have stayed in touch with many people at the firm over the years and to return as a partner is a fantastic opportunity for me. The construction and engineering department has expanded extensively over the past few years and I am delighted to add my expertise to the team.”
Michael has acted in high profile cases including Emerald Supplies v British Airways and Microsoft Mobile OY v Sony Europe and others.
Michael has particular experience in professional indemnity and public liability insurance, acting for both underwriters and insureds on policy coverage, subrogated claims, and for insureds resisting claims against them.
He also has experience in general commercial litigation, damages claims arising from cartel activity, construction disputes, product liability claims, serious fraud, and regulatory matters.
Michael’s appointment follows the arrival of fellow construction partner Richard Anderson who joined the team from Gateley Plc.
Mark London, Partner and Head of Construction and Engineering at Devonshires, said: “Michael knows Devonshires well having worked at the firm previously and his appointment is fantastic news for us and our clients. His wealth of experience complements the already strong team we have and continues the impressive expansion of the construction and engineering practice.”
